större (och dyrbarare) sten på radband o. d., avsedd att leda nyttjarens tankar i viss riktning. JMPs 410. han (ɔ sanctus dominicus).. . gaff honom eth psaltara bandh, som haffde cl smaa sten, oc xv stora märkestena oppa hwilkom han skulle läsa parter noster ib 411. ib.

Orthography: Early Old Swedish used different letters for ä and ö, so märkesten may have also been written as mærkesten
